NEWPORT BEACH-CDM

DESCRIPTION:

The City of Newport Beach started with 300 people and 31.5 miles of water frontage and was incorporated in 1906. The city was named after small ships from San Diego started to use the port as a trading center. The town was established in 1892. The Newport Harbor area is a resort, business community, port for pleasure craft and beautiful residential area. There are a myriad of yacht clubs, sailing schools, boat rentals, sportfishing fleets and marine-related facilities. Fine restaurants, shops and boutiques line the harbor. The eight islands of the Bay add elegance to the scene with beautiful waterfront homes, immaculate piers and lush gardens.

Corona del Mar, the “crown by the sea”, was developed and named by George Hart in 1904, but later changed to Balboa Palisades the the F.D. Cornell Company in 1915. Corona del Mar is now part of Newport Beach.

   

LOCATION:

Approximately 45 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 80 miles northwest of San Diego.

   

CLIMATE:

Winter averages 50 degrees, summer average is 70. Rainfall is 12” average.

   

SHOPPING:

Fashion Island in Newport Center is a popular mall and South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa is just a short drive away. Corona del Mar and Lido Island offer colorful boutiques.

   

SCHOOLS:

Newport Beach is part of the Newport Mesa Unified School District. Local colleges include the University of California at Irvine, Coastline Community College, Orange Coast College and Southern California College.

   

RECREATION:

In Newport there are 224 acres of beaches, 100 acres of parks, 1,215 acres of harbor waters.

 

 

TRANSPORTATION:

The Orange County Transit District services the area as does Greyhound. The Orange County Airport is located in Irvine.

 

 

HOSPITALS:

Hoag Memorial Hospital is located in Newport Beach.
