LIDO ISLE

BOUNDARIES:

Lido Isle, a private island community located in the southwest portion of Newport Harbor, is easily accessible from Pacific Coast Highway view Newport Boulevard and Via Lido.

HOMES:

There are approximately 865 homes on Lido Isle, approximately 250 on the bayfront and 615 on the interior of the island.

HISTORY:

In the early 1890'a an early Newport Beach settler found herself stranded with the changing tide while playing on the grassy marsh that was to become Lido Isle.

The man who financed the drege-and-fill operation in 1923 to create the present contours of the 114-acre island envisioned a major commercial wharf teeming with entertprise.

Among those who know their geography, the name "Lido Isle" conjures up the Old World charm and luxuriant style of the Italian resort of the same name tht sits on the Adriatic at Venice.

That's the atmosphere the develops sought - and eventually achieved - when they struggled to sell lots for as little as $450 during the depth of th Great Depression. The island was just a wind-swept marsh in the bay a hundred years ago. Grass grew in the center, but at low tide the shoreline was alive with crabs and shellfish.

STYLE:

The island is home to a number of different styles from contemporary to traditional. Although there is no required architectural motif, the original theme of the island was intended to be Mediterranean in style. Since the community evolved over a 60 year period, the architecture and design of the homes is varied, although they all feature either tile or slate roofs to promote the overall flavor. Many of the interior homes are fronted on stradas, or garden paths, and there are numerous other stradas and parks on the island.

AGE:

Originally developed in the 1930's, Lido Isle was designed to resemble the small, coastal Italian area after which it is named.

FEATURES:

There are numerous community activities and groups for all ages, including the Lido Isle Tennis Club, the Lido Isle Women's Club and the Lido Isle Yacht Club. Children can take association sponsored tennis and sailing lessons without leaving the island. The Lido Isle Community Association, governed by the Lido Isle Board of Directors, oversees and maintains all of the community properties, including the clubhouse, private beaches, docks, moorings and parks. The beaches of the peninsula are easily reached by bike or on foot.
